The Zambian Police has banned political rallies in Livingstone though the elections are to be held five days time.

Deputy Inspector of Police Solomon Jere announced on Sunday February 24, 2013 citing reports of violence in the constituency. The ban comes barely a day after President Michael Sata had a rally in the constituency.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema who had planned a number of rallies in the constituency before the elections will now have to cancel them.

The Police say campaigns will be allowed but no public rallies and one wonders how this will be done because if more than 10 people gather without a permit it is regarded as an illegal assembly.

The announcement has not been received well.
