PF govt stops filing-in of nominations in Petauke, Malambo and Mulobezi

Filing-in of nominations for Petauke, Malambo and Mulobezi by-elections have been put on hold again after the Patriotic Front (PF) government obtained an injunction from the Supreme Court.

This is in a case where the PF government is challenging the High Court verdict allowing opposition aspiring candidates, MMD’s Dora Siliya, her counterparts from UPND, Maxwell Mwale and Hastings Sililo.

The trio whose 2011 elections were nullified due to electoral malpractices were cleared by the High Court this week to re-contest their respective seats. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) then set Tuesday, September 9 as nominations day.

But the State has appealed against the ruling and stayed the nominations until the case is determined. The Supreme Court has since set September 11, 2013 as the date to hear the case.

The State’s aguments in their appeal filed by Attoney General Mumba Malila can be read by clicking here.
