The Zambian Government has denied reports that over 16 inmates at the Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe died after there were severely tortured by prison warder’s recruits.

Home Affairs Minister, Edgar Lungu says it is not true that the prisoners were tortured and died.
He explained that the Prison service only send over 300 prison warders recruits to the prison to instil disciplinary measures on the ailing inmates.

He said the operation which the recruits took also resulted in the confiscation of prohibited instruments and drugs.
Mr. Lungu has since asked Kasempa Member of Parliament, Kabinga Pande to apology for issuing a misleading and alarming statement to the nation.

He advised the MMD parliamentarian to get his facts rights before issuing any statement that he said can cause alarm in the country.

Mr. Lungu said this in a ministerial statement in parliament in response to a directive by the speaker for him to inform the nation on what transpired at the prison where it was alleged that 16 inmates had been tortured and killed.

On Tuesday, Mr. Pande raised a point of order were he alleged that 16 inmates had been tortured to death at Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe.
