Nurses not shaken with govt’s threats, continues with strike

Nurses who are on strike have again defied the directive by government to resume work 5pm on Thursday or face dismissal charges for being absentee from work.

A check at two biggest hospitals, University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and Levy Mwanawasa by Zambian Eye Thursday evening found that Nurses had not resumed work as directed.

Matrons, Nurses from Defense forces were found working while at UTH, there was a reinforcement from Students Nurses.

Authorities say they will only speak on Friday if the situation remains the same.

Health Minister Joseph Kasonde together with his Labour counterpart visited UTH and had a meeting with the Nurses where they informed them that their strike was illegal and asked them to report for work.

Dr. Kasonde later at a media briefing directed that all Nurses who were on strike report for work at 5pm or face dismissal charges.

The strike has now entered day seven and among other conditions the Nurses are demanding a salary of not less than K10, 000, which is equivalent to about 1800 dollars.
