New constitution leaves Barotse Agreement out

The constitution convention sector-group on general principles sitting in Lusaka to deliberate on the submissions received by the technical committee on drafting the Zambian Constitution have resolved that the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 should not be recognised in the constitution.

And the sector-group on representation of the people also resolved that 50 per cent plus one threshold for a winning presidential candidate be upheld in the constitution as stated in the first draft constitution.

Meanwhile the sector group on general principles has resolved that freedom fighters for independence be recognised in the preamble of the constitution as the case in the Kenyan and South African constitution.

Delegates who include professionals and experts on Wednesday commenced their deliberations on submissions that the Committee had received.
