Mutati’s bid to head UNCTAD fails

Poor diplomatic relations by the PF government has at least saved an expensive by-election after Felix Mutati’s bid to head UNCTAD, which PF and President Michael Sata personally backed, has failed as UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon nominates Mukhisa Kituyi of Kenya for the top job.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has nominated Mukhisa Kituyi of Kenya to serve as Secretary-General of UNCTAD for a term of four years beginning 1 September 2013.
Mr. Kituyi is a former member of the Kenyan Parliament and a former Minister of Commerce and Industry of Kenya.
The nomination will go to the UN General Assembly for confirmation.
If confirmed, Mr. Kituyi will succeed Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand, who assumed the post on 1 September 2005 and was reappointed in 2009. Mr. Supachai will conclude his second four-year term of office on 31 August.
