More job losses as Mopani cuts local suppliers

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) has decided to cut-off 1, 800 local suppliers and will now be dealing straight with manufacturers, a move aimed to reduce costs by the mining company.
MCM is expected to hold a press briefing tomorrow  (Tuesday) where they are expected to talk about the issue of doing away with 1,800 local suppliers in order to deal straight with suppliers and reduce costs.
But, Mine Suppliers and Contractors Association of Zambia (MSCAZ) president Bwalya Mufonka  vowed to fight for his members in the association.

Mr Mufonka also urged the government to intervene into the matter because the decision by MCM would worsen the unemployment levels in the country.
He said the contractors and suppliers were creating jobs for the local people, but now that MCM has decided to do away with local suppliers, even the few people who were employed would become jobless.
