MMD candidate Evelyn Mwanawasa pulls out of Kafulafuta race

The MMD has suffered a major set back in the Kafulafuta parliamentary by-election after the Mwanawasa Family withdrew its candidate, Evelyn Mwanawasa from the race.

Family spokesperson Gladys Lundwe said Evelyn was withdrawn from the race after suffering hypertension. Lundwe who is former Lands Minister in the MMD government said Evelyn suffered high blood pressure and is admitted at Ndola Central hosipital.

She added that the decision has been taken in the interest of her health and the family has also resolved that she will not go back to politics. Lundwe said Evelyn will not go back to the campaigns even if she recovers from the illness.

Evelyn was adopted by the former ruling party to contest the Kafulafuta seat in Ndola rural which fell vacant after the MMD Member of Parliament resigned to join the PF.

But the MMD has dismissed the reports accusing Lundwe of scheming the whole thing to disadvantage the former ruling party. MMD Wednesday evening said they will wait to hear from Evelyn.

MMD National Youth Coordinator Bowman Lusambo accused the PF of being behind the scheme but said the party was optimistic that Evelyn was still in the race. He accused Lundwe of being an opportunist who would do anything for material gain.
