Minister orders all Striking Nurses to report for work at 5pm today

The Zambian government has now given the Nurses that have been on strike for the past five days up to 5pm Thursday to report back for work or be charged for absenteeism.

Minister of Health Dr.Joseph Kasonde who visited the country’s biggest hospital, University Teaching Hospital today announced the ultimatum at a media briefing in Lusaka.

The Nurses on Monday refused to obey the Minister’s order to report for work. But the Minister today said the strike was illegal and all nurses that will not report for work will be considered absent from duty and that the process of charging them for absenteeism will be commenced.

Dr. Kasonde explained that he together with Labour counterpart Fackson Shamenda this morning met the striking nurses at University Teaching Hospital and explained the position. He said Nurses who will not report for work at 5pm  on strike will be required to give reasons for their absenteeism on an individual basis and exculpate themselves as to why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.
