Mansa cops nab Congolese for smuggling mealie-meal

POLICE in Mansa have arrested a Congolese national and recovered 400 by 25-kilogramme bag of mealie-meal he allegedly hid in a bush near Bahati Secondary School.

Police have charged Mike Mukinje, 25 of Lubumbashi with assembling for the purpose of smuggling.

Luapula Province deputy police commissioner Aaron Jonas Mushanga said his office followed a tip from the public they had seen mealie-meal hidden in the bush.

He explained that officers went to the location and found both Mukinje and the mealie-meal.

“My officers could not communicate with Mukinje because he only speaks Swahili. So right now we just making arrangements to find people who can interpret Swahili before the suspect can be taken to court,” Mushanga said.

He said it was believed that the suspect together with unknown people wanted to take the mealie-meal to Congo DR via Matanda but could not succeed due to several arrests that were recorded in connection with smuggling.
