Let us consolidate the gains of constitutional rule through peaceful election – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), is imploring Ghanaians to choose peace as the electioneering campaigns of political parties gather momentum.They should desist from amplifying intemperate language and unverified claims by politicians which are often shared on social media, thereby raising the political temperature.Madam Margaret Konama, the Ashanti Regional Director of NCCE, who made the call, said there was the need for Ghanaians to consolidate the gains after 30 years of multi-party democracy.She was speaking at the first meeting of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting of Sekyere Kumawu District in the Ashanti Region.The IPDC is an initiative of the NCCE which seeks to proactively address issues that may come up at the constituency level as various political parties lace their boots for the 2024 general elections.The goal is to ensure meaningful engagement geared towards constructive dialogue and conflict resolution, building trust and cooperation among political pa rties, strengthening democratic institutions and processes as well as working towards peaceful election in December, this year.Membership of the IPDC includes political parties, Electoral Commission, youth and women groups, security agencies, the Clergy, traditional leaders, and persons with disability.Madam Konama emphasised the critical role of the IPDC in shaping Ghana's democracy and charged members to work for God and Country.She spoke about vote buying, misinformation, disinformation, religious tolerance and how they could disturb the peace in the country ahead of the election if not properly managed.The Regional Director applauded members of the committee for accepting to be part of the advocacy for peace, saying that posterity would remember them for their invaluable contributions to national development.Political party representatives and the Clergy took turns to deliver peace messages, pledging their commitment to peaceful election.Madam Ataa Nyamekye Kessey, the District Director of Ele ctoral Commission (EC), assured the committee and the people Sekyere Kumawu of the EC's commitment to supervise a free, fair, transparent and credible election.Source: Ghana News Agency
