Kitwe’s hit-and-run taxi driver turns himself in

THE Kitwe taxi driver who fled the accident scene after his vehicle lost control and rammed into a crowd of trainee police recruits has surrendered himself to the police.

About 21 police recruits from the Kamfinsa Mobile Unit sustained serious injuries in the late hours of Friday when a Toyota Spacio registration number ACR 8537 ran out of control and hit them on the Kitwe-Ndola road.

The trainees from the School of the Public Order Maintenance were on route march when the incident happened.

Police have since arrested the man identified as Peter Masumbuko, 22.

“The driver who ran away after hitting a group of recruits has surrendered himself. He is a resident of Mindolo,” police sources said.

Kitwe police officer commanding Fred Mulenga also confirmed the incident but referred all queries to Copperbelt police commissioner Mary Tembo, who could not be reached by press time.
