Mali has recorded a first win at the AFCON 2013 tournament underway in South Africa by beating Niger 1 – 0 on a Western African derby played at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth on Sunday evening.

The game started on a slow note and could not produce any goal in the first half.

With six minutes to go when people thought it was going to end 0 – 0 in the second half Mali skipper Seydou Keita took advantage of a lapse on the Niger defence that saw the goal keeper Kassaly Daouda leave the goal by shooting into the goal. The ball penetrated through the panicking Niger players to hit the back of the net.

Mali now leads Group B with three points while Ghana and Congo DR have 1 point each.

This becomes the first win at the tournament after the first games ended draw. The host South Africa versus debut Cape Verde 0 – 0, and Angola, Morocco game recorded no goal. The third game between Ghana and Congo DR ended 2 – 2.
