KCM begins transporting copper via ZRL, TAZARA

KONKOLA Copper Mines has commenced monthly transportation of 4,000 metric tonnes of finished copper on Zambia Railways and TAZARA trains.

And transport and communications deputy minister Panji Kaunda says an efficient rail network will enhance transportation of goods, reduce congestion on the roads and enable the treasury to make substantial savings from constant repairs which would in turn broaden spending in critical social sectors.

Speaking at the flagging-off of the first Zambia Railways train carrying copper from KCM’s Nchanga and Nkana for onward transportation to the port of Dar es Salaam via TAZARA yesterday at the Nkana refinery, KCM executive director David Ng’andu said the tonnage would increase to 10,000 metric tonnes per month depending on how the two railway companies would fair on the initial agreement and also copper output by the mining company.
