Kansanshi Mine Helps Solwezi Schools

IN the quest to help improve education standards, Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi has joined government efforts by donating material to 20 schools in the district.

The recent donation comprises more than 18,000 textbooks and 310 desks to Government which would be shared among the 20 schools in the district.

The mine, through Kansanshi Foundation, has once again contributed to improving the quality of education in Solwezi and made the donation at a ceremony held at Kansanshi Foundation Institute on April 8, 2014.

The books, catering for English, mathematics, science and creative and technology studies for grades one to seven,and the desks, were sourced at the cost of more than K787,000 under the mine’s 2014 Education Support Programme.

The books and desks will be distributed to 20 schools that the mine supports under the mine’s Kansanshi Education Quality Improvement Programme (KanEquip).

Assistant general manager of Kansanshi Mine, Alan Delaney, handed over the items to North-Western Province Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga.

Speaking at the function, Mr Delaney said the name of Kansanshi Mine is now inextricably linked in people’s minds with efforts to improve the quality of education in Solwezi.

“This is so because only recently, the company in partnership with a USAID Zambia project called Read to Succeed, handed over to Government literacy kits that were distributed to all the 122 Government primary schools in Solwezi district,” he said.

Last November the company held its inaugural teacher certification ceremony where it awarded certificates of attendance to 70 primary school teachers drawn from Solwezi schools. The teachers had completed a 10-month course on effective teaching and learning.

Mr Delaney also reminded the audience that in May 2013, Kansanshi Mining Plc handed over to Government 17,300 textbooks to the same schools, a step which at that time raised the pupil textbook ratio in mathematics, English and science from nearly nothing for a whole class to only two pupils to a textbook–a first in the lives of most of the school children.

In order to highlight the significance of Kansanshi Mining Plc support to education, Mr Delaney retraced the status of education delivery in the KanEquip schools prior to the mine’s support.

He said:”I’ll put today’s contribution into context by briefly revisiting the situation we found in Solwezi schools in 2012 when we began developing our education support programme.

We saw schools where learning and teaching resources were in woefully short supply.

We know there were many schools that did not have a single textbook at given grade levels that they could place in the hands of children during lessons.

“Where teachers were lucky to have textbooks, they did not, however , have the teacher’s guide to help them plan lessons. We visited schools and saw with monotonous regularity how much teacher-centred and rote-based the teaching was. We saw pupils, especially in community schools, that were sitting on community-made benches and wrote on the floor.”

Mr Delaney pledged the mine’s continued support to education and other socio-economic endeavours aimed at uplifting the lives of people of Solwezi specifically and North-Western Province in general.

He said on its part, the mine was gratified by the knowledge that the books and desks would offer a chance for a better life to 27,000 pupils in the KanEquip schools.

In accepting the books and desks, Mr Malupenga thanked Kansanshi Mining Plc for joining Government in investing in the future of the country.

He said that children were the future and educated children were the assurance of an even brighter future for the country.

Mr Malupenga pointed out that books play a pivotal role in developing literacy and numeracy, and that all people and not just pupils should develop a culture of reading.
