Kabimba trying to manipulate constitution – YALI

The Young Leaders Initiative (YALI) has charged that Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba is taking a tough stance on the technical team drafting the constitution  because he wants to easily manipulate the constitution making process.

YALI President Andrew Ntewewe alleged that Kabimba is  taking the Zambian people for granted by refusing to give the technical  committee an extension to complete the process. He said the Minister who is part of cabinet wants to remove certain clauses on the pretext that it is the technical team that left them out.

He wondered why the Minister could be in such a hurry as not to give a month extension to the committee to completes its work when it has already wasted time from the initial time frame of a year to now close to 2 year.

The YALI President has since advised the Minister to strike a compromise and reach a deal that will see the constitution process is completed and handed over in its complete form.

Ntewewe said this when he featured on a live radio programme on Phoenix on Wednesday. And John Chewe from the Coalition of Organisation spearheading the constitution has also requested the government to sit down with the technical team as they try to come up with the people driven constitution.

Chewe said there is need to negotiate in an effort to come up with the people driven constitution. He also disclosed that the civil society’s plans to table a private members bill to protect the process and asked Zambians to petition their Members of Parliament to support the bill.
