Increased Zesco tarifs a burden on consumers-ZACA

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says the approved increase in ZESCO electricity tariffs will be a burden on the pockets of consumers.

Speaking to Qfm in an interview, ZACA Executive Director Muyunda Ililonga says instead of increasing tariffs for domestic consumers, government should have increased the tariffs for the mining sector.

Mr. Ililonga notes that domestic consumers should not be made to subsidize the mining sector when the mining industry is the biggest consumer of electricity.

He adds that by approving the increase in electricity tariffs, government is giving with one hand and taking with the other thereby eroding the salary increments awarded to civil servants.

He says it is unfair that poor majority Zambians are being subjected to a high cost of living which they can barely many afford.

Mr. Ililonga has since appealed to the government to reverse the decision to allow ZESCO increase tariffs for domestic consumers, but instead make mining companies pay appropriate tariffs. / Qfm
