Hickey asks media to recognise veteran journalists

RADIO Phoenix proprietor Errol Hickey has asked the media industry to recognise contributions made by veteran journalists.

Speaking after he received the MISA Media Freedom Award, the seemingly joyous Hickey said it was humbling to be recognised among the advocates of media freedom.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia awards held at Lusaka’s Pamodzi Hotel on Friday evening had 14 categories.

“It is time to honour old journalists, journalists that inspired us,” he said.

Hickey cited veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga as one of the old journalists that inspired others and deserve to be honoured.

Earlier, information and broadcasting deputy minister Mwansa Kapeya who was the guest of honour, said the awards were an important platform for the promotion of media freedom.
