Govt will not privatise public media – Kapeya

INFORMATION and broadcasting deputy minister Mwansa Kapeya says the government has no intention of privatising public media institutions.

And Kapeya says Zambia will only migrate from analog to digital in 2014 and not by the end of this year as earlier stated.

During a familiarisation tour of media institutions in Ndola on Monday, Kapeya said there were calls for public media like ZNBC, Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia to be privatised but said there was no country in the world that did not have public media.

“There are calls for ZNBC, Zambia Daily mail and Times of Zambia to be privatised but we cannot privatise them. There is no country in this world that doesn’t have public media. What we are going to do is to recapitalise the three media institutions and we will leave them to operate professionally,” he said.

Kapeya said ZNBC, Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia were limping because the MMD government abused the institutions.
