Govt awards teacher unions comprehensive package

THE government has awarded teacher unions a comprehensive package as part of this year’s collective agreement for improved conditions of service.

During a signing ceremony with four teacher unions yesterday in Lusaka, education permanent secretary Chishimba Nkoshya said in view of the implementation of the job evaluation and regarding exercise, the government would review salaries and conditions of service for teachers with effect from September 1.

“Government and the unions have also agreed to implement the public service medical and funeral insurance schemes by June, 2013. Further, government and the unions wishes to state that the public service credit union will be operationalised in June 2013. This will enable teachers to access loans at affordable rates for their personal development and welfare,” Nkoshya said.

He said the government would ensure that teachers were properly placed in their appropriate salary scales.
