Govt Awards Construction Of The New HQ For Southern Province To a Chinese Firm.

The Zambian Government has awarded the contract for the construction of the new provincial administration headquarters for southern province in Choma to a Chinese firm.

China Jiangxi Corporation will construct the six storey building at a cost of K31 million at the former Choma airstrip and the project will be executed within 18 months.

Speaking in Choma on Monday July 22,2013 when he officially handed over the construction site to the Chinese company, Southern province permanent secretary Bernard Namachila said the PF government wants the project to be speedily implemented within the given time frame.

He said the Chinese contractor is expected to mobilize equipment and move on site to begin work within two weeks.

Namachila said the handover of the construction site to the contractor puts into effect the presidential directive of relocating the provincial headquarters from Livingstone to Choma.

The PS said President Sata wants appropriate infrastructure befitting provincial capital status to be put in place in Choma.

Namachila urged the Chinese contractor to observe the contract terms and work according to the agreed timeframe.

Namachila disclosed that government has also awarded contracts to other companies to put up housing units for government workers in Choma.

He said the contractors will also be handed over their construction sites today so that they begin work immediately.

And a representative of China Jiangxi Corporation, David Yang, assured government that his firm will employ modern and impressive architecture in constructing the new government office complex.

Yang said apart from the quality works, the company will ensure that the project is implemented within the agreed time frame adding that a number of job opportunities will also be created for local people.

Speaking earlier, acting senior architect in the Buildings department, Felix Ndola, said the department will ensure the contractor puts up quality work.

The buildings department is the consultant for the project.
