FOUR ZAMBIAN TACHER UNIONS TO MERGE

Four teachers unions in Zambia have assured the government of their commitment to merging.

Representatives of the teachers unions told Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga here Wednesday that they were determined to form a single union.

During the meeting with Dr Wanchinga at his office in Lusaka, the union leaders assured the Minister of their support for the government and that they would work at enhancing professionalism.

Dr Wanchinga congratulated the unions for their efforts to work together for a common purpose and assured them that he would work with all relevant stakeholders to attain the government’s vision for the education sector.

According to a statement issued later by Ministry of General Education Spokesperson Hillary Chipango, the four teacher unions are the Zambia National Union of Teachers, Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia, Professional Teachers Union of Zambia and the Secondary School Teachers Union of Zambia.
