Fire us – Striking Nurses dares government as Strike spreads to Northern, Eastern provinces

Nurses have dared government saying they are ready to be fired for demanding for befitting conditions of service.

Minister of Health Dr. Joseph Kasonde on Thursday had warned all Nurses on strike to report for work by 5pm or face dismissal.

A check at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) by Zambian Eye Friday morning, November 29, 2013 found that the Nurses had not resumed work. Students Nurses were found attending to patients.

Nurses found on the grounds of UTH vowed never to retain to work until their grievances were addressed. The Nurses says government should go ahead and fire all the Nurses who are already under-staffed.

Zambia Nurses Union branch Chairperson at UTH says there is a presidential order demanding that Nurses resume work. She said letters are being written to Nurses to explain why they have been absent from work.

The Nurses have been given upto 2pm today to exculpate themselves on why they are absent from work or face dismissal

Meanwhile the strike has now spread to Chipata, Eastern province, Kasama in Northern province and Livingstone in Southern province.  In Kasama Students Nurses have taken over the operations while at Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital, management is now just attending to emergence cases.
