Explain subsidy issues — Sata orders

By ANTHONY MULOWA  –

PRESIDENT Michael Sata has directed Cabinet and deputy ministers to explain Government’s resolve to remove subsidies on maize and fuel.

Mr Sata, who issued the directive during a caucus meeting held at State House yesterday, urged the ministers to work with greater urgency and ensure that they engage people on Government’s decision to scrap the subsidies.

He said ministers should assure the citizens that the bold steps were meant to facilitate practical and equitable allocation of national wealth among the people.

“Let’s tell the people that these reforms are designed to produce a better financial system that breeds sufficient jobs; a fair distribution of income and opportunities in favour of the poor, who are the majority of our population,” the President said.

This is contained in a statement released in Lusaka yesterday by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, George Chellah.
