Sunyani: The 40th National Farmers Day celebration will shine a spotlight on the hard work and dedication of 11 deserving farmers in the Bono Region, as they are set to receive awards for their significant contributions to the fisheries and cocoa sectors, announced Mr. Denis Abugri Amenga, the Bono Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Amenga, in an interview in Sunyani, revealed that in addition to the farmers, an agriculture extension officer in the region would also be recognized for their efforts. He encouraged farmers who believe they are eligible for awards to engage in the enlistment processes. Mr. Amenga clarified that the packages provided to farmers attending the event serve as incentives rather than award prizes, responding to some complaints from farmers about the awards. Some farmers in the Sunyani Municipality had expressed concerns that the Farmers Day celebrations did not adequately benefit those who deserved recognition. Mr. Am enga addressed these concerns by explaining that items such as Wellington boots, key bar soaps, machetes, and wax print given at the event were tokens of appreciation for participation rather than awards. He emphasized that award winners underwent a thorough enlistment and screening process, including farm assessments.Mr. Amenga also noted that it is typically the responsibility of the Municipal and District Assemblies to arrange transportation for farmers to the event, but due to the large number of participants, some farmers had to find their own means of transport. He added that this year, the celebration would not have a regional component; instead, it would be organized at the local level by various District and Municipal assemblies. The regional award winners are expected to participate in the national celebration in Accra.
