ECZ Announce Four Parliamentary By-Elections Date

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set September 5 2013 as the date for the four parliamentary by-elections and Seven local government by-elections around the country.

The four parliamentary by-election are Petauke Central, Malambo, Mkaika seats in Eastern Province and Mulobezi in Western Province.

ECZ Acting Public Relations Manager Sylvia Bwalya said in a statement on Tuesday evening that the by-elections will be held on Thursday 5th September starting at 06 hours and closing at 18: 00 hours. She said aspiring candidates are expected to file in their nomination papers on August 9 between 09 hours and 15 hours.

Bwalya added that campaigns for the by-elections will start  immediately after the filling of nomination and stop on Wednesday 4th September as according to the new electoral laws. She explained that aspiring candidates will be required to pay K500 as nomination fees and be required to bring along 9 supporters.

She also named the wards where the by-elections will be held as Mangwe in Chadiza, Kapembwa in Mumila, Vyamba and Chisha wards in Mpulungu, Thendere in Muchinga and Katipa ward in Nyimba.

For the wards by-election, Bwalya said aspiring candidates will be required to pay K100, K75 and K50 respectively for City, Municipal and District Councils.

The Petauke Central, Malambo, and Mulobezi seats fell vacant after the Supreme court nullified the elections of incumbent Members of Parliament while the Mkaika seat was caused by the resignation of area MP who defected from the MMD to join the PF.
