Early marriages must be stopped – Kaseba

FIRST Lady Dr Christine Kaseba says it is unfortunate that the existence of child marriages is promoted by cultural practices which are highly respected and rooted in the African tradition.

And Paramount Chief Mpezeni has appealed to traditional leaders in the country to ensure they end child marriages in their areas.

Launching the campaign against child marriages at Luangeni village in Mpezeni’s area on Saturday, Dr Kaseba said the country could not have a situation where statutory law prohibits child marriage but customary law allows it.

She said early marriages must be stopped.

“We cannot have a situation where defilement of girls as young as 12 years is backed by the law! How then do we come up with strategies that can protect our children when laws that are supposed to protect children are so fluid and porous?” Dr Kaseba asked.
