Armed anti robbery police squad picked up some tax drivers at Lusaka’s Zani Muone tax rank on to help with investigations involving a number of car thefts in Lusaka.

A Police Officer who chose to remain anonymity has confirmed to Zambian Eye. Mandevu Police Post arrested five tax drivers who were picked up randomly from Zani Muone tax rank to help with investigations regarding a number of motor vehicle thefts in Lusaka.

He said so far police has found 11 tyres of different sizes from the house of one of the suspects.

But relatives to the affected drivers who have been camping at the Police Post since Wednesday to secure their release complained to Zambian Eye that Police acted from hearsay and did not carry out enough investigations before carrying out arrests.

They said most of the people who were arrested were innocent.

‘‘Police are not supposed to act on hearsay or rumours. They must be sure of the case before they lock someone into a police cell. It is very unfair. We will not allow this kind of barbarism in this country, ’’ Racheal Chwala one of the relative of the affected tax drivers complained to Zambian Eye.

A named police Criminal Investigation Officer however   argued that they received a tip from their reliable sources that the drivers they picked are suspects in the case of car thefts.
