Detained CBU Students Set Free

THE 25 Copperbelt University (CBU) students who were arrested in connection with last Friday’s riots have been released from police custody.

The students, who were detained at Riverside Police Station, were discharged after they each paid K22 as admission of guilt.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Joyce Kasosa said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that all the 25 students were released from Police custody after admitting the charge of conduct likely to cause the breach of peace slapped on each of them and paying their fines.

“They were charged with conduct likely to cause the breach of peace and they admitted the charge and they all paid K22.5 admission of guilt fine before being released,” she said.

She cautioned students to desist from involving themselves in violent conduct that led to destruction of property.

Violent protests last Friday characterised CBU after students took to the streets blocking Jambo Drive stoning vehicles in protests over allowances.
