Defections not my baby, says Sata

PRESIDENT Sata has dismissed accusations that the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) government is responsible for the escalating number of defections that are causing parliamentary by-elections.

President Sata, who described the claims as “idle and trivial speculation”, said those criticising the concept of by-elections should be level-headed and remain honest when expressing their views.

“Our Constitution is clear on the circumstances and procedures under which parliamentary or local government by-elections are permissible. All registered political parties are at liberty to exercise their constitutional right to participate in any subsequent contest that might arise,” Mr Sata said.

This is according to a statement released yesterday by the President’s special assistant for press and public relations George Chellah.

The President said his administration, which is devoted to the rule of law, finds the accusations “mischievous and time-wasting”.
