DEC destroys seized drugs

THE Drug Enforcement Commission in Lusaka yesterday destroyed over 800 kilogrammes of drugs that had been forfeited to the state by the court.

DEC public relations officer Samuel Silomba stated yesterday that the drugs that had been destroyed consist mainly of cannabis, hashish cake and miraa.

“These drugs, which were part of the exhibits tendered before the court, have been forfeited to the state following the conclusion of the cases over a period of 11 months,” he stated.

Silomba also stated that the commission had arrested two women for cultivating more than four tonnes of cannabis.

“The two arrested include Maureen Simaumba, 52, a peasant farmer of Meezi village in Monze East for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 3.1 tonnes and Lavendar Simaumba, 29, a peasant farmer of the same village for unlawful cultivation of cannabis weighing 1.2 tonnes,” he stated.

He stated that the suspects were in custody and would appear in court soon.
