Constitution convention opens with a call for no foreign interference

Government says it will not allow anybody outside Zambia or foreigners to interfere with the formulation of the Zambian constitution.

Speaking during the official opening of the national constitution convention in Lusaka this morning, acting President Edgar Lungu said the constitution making process should be taken with a great sense of patriotism at all costs.

Mr. Lungu stressed that there was no need to pander to foreign interests or seek to incorporate standards and principles which do not reflect the unique Zambian socio- political and cultural values.

The acting president stated that the unsuccessful attempt of the past should motivate all delegates to finally put before the Zambian people a constitution that entrenches constitutional democracy and a constitution that upholds the rule of law.

He further implored all delegates to must ensure that the constitution is credible in the governance system where rights and liberties of all people are fully respected and protected.

And speaking at the same function Justice minister and Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba has maintained that the PF government will do everything possible to ensure that the Zambian people have a better constitution that would stand a taste of time.
