‘Cash for news’ coverage is corruption – Mushala

EASTERN Province permanent secretary Bert Mushala says the media should desist from the practice of ‘cash for news coverage’, where journalists publish positive news after being paid.

Officiating at the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) organised media workshop in Chipata on Wednesday, Mushala said ‘cash for news coverage’ amounted to corruption as the practice brought down the credibility and professionalism of the media bodies.

He said the media had an obligation to provide information to the public, to cover stories of corruption by politicians, business individuals and the general citizenry and not half baked stories or segregated stories based on personal opinions and personal vendetta.

“Corruption retards the social, political and economic gains of a country by diverting the scarce national resources from the intended areas of investment.
