By-election looming, Dora Siliya’s seat nullified

Another by-election is looming in the country as the Supreme Court nullifies the election of Dora Siliya as Petauke Central Member of Parliament (MP).

The Supreme Court nullified the election on precept that the elections were marred by election malpractice. Siliya had won the case in the High Court but PF losing candidate in the 2011 polls Leonard Banda appealed against the verdict to the Supreme Court.

Passing the verdict on Friday, June 28, 2013, Supreme Court Judge Elizabeth Muyovweon overturned the High Court ruling on the bases that there was overwhelming evidence of widespread corruption.

This adds to the many number of nullification of seats in Parliament held by the former ruling party – MMD by the Courts of law.

The PF losing candidate in the 2011 election, Leonard Banda had petitioned the seat on allegation of corruption.

But the MMD has expressed concerns at the unprecedented number of nullification of the MMD seats by the courts.

MMD Vice President, Michael Kaingu said the party is saddened by the latest event of the Petauke seat which is held by its senior Member, Dora Siliya.
