Bus owners angry, government is criminalizing us

Bus Owners in Lusaka are angry that the PF government is trying to criminalize their genuine demand to increase bus fares following a hike in fuel.

Lusaka Capital Buses proprietor Ismail Kankhara who Flash Buses said on Monday, May 6, 2013 that it is unfair for government to criminalize the transporters who had a genuine cause for hiking bus fares. He explained that currently the transporters are running at a loss since government has told them not to effect the proposed fares.

Transport, Communications, Works and Supply Deputy Minister Mwimba Malama on Sunday said the proposed hike of bus fares by Kr1 is an act of sabotage by some bus operators whom he accused of wanting to “paint a bad picture” of the authorities.

By press time an agreement had not been announced between government and transporters. But a check at Inter City Bus Terminers in Lusaka by Zambian Eye on Monday found that bus fares had been increased. One of the longest routes thus Lusaka to Nchelenge in Luapula province was now Kr200 from Kr160.
