3,500 men under go circumcision in Chipata

About 3500 men in Eastern Province underwent circumcision during the just ended male circumcision month.

Eastern Province Medical Officer Kennedy Malama who revealed this development has expressed happiness that the province had gone beyond the target of 2000 that was set for Eastern Province by the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Malama noted that the campaign received over whelming support from both the young and old.

“I am happy that we managed to surpass the 2000 target that we were given by the Ministry the response was overwhelming, “he noted.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial Medical Officer said this in an interview in Chipata, yesterday.

He said that it was encouraging to see that just within a month more than 3500 male were circumcised just in one province.

He stated that the rise in the number can be attributed to intensified campaign messages among communities on the importance of the exercise.

Dr. Malama explained that slowly people have started understanding the health benefits of male circumcision.

He also commended Traditional Leaders in the province for taking a lead in creating awareness on male circumcision.

He disclosed that Chiefs in all the districts of the province have been actively involved and have supported all the programmes on male circumcision.

“We have received a good response on the male circumcision programmes from almost all the chiefs in the districts,” he said.

Dr. Malama further hoped that the support by traditional leaders would be sustained for the benefit of their subjects.
