Fodep Calls for Revision of Chiefs Act

The Foundation for Democratic Process has called for the revision of the Chiefs Act to protect the rights of traditional leaders.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi said the Act in its current state infringed on the rights of traditional leaders.

Chipenzi urged traditional leaders to rise up and defend their rights to being independent from political interference.

He said where there were disputes the ultimate decision should lie with the subjects through their established channel of conflict resolution.

On Monday, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkandu Luo said that no chief would be allowed to rule without government recognition.

Luo said that the selection of chiefs will have to be driven by government warning that any chiefdom that did not meet this criterion will have their chiefs arrested.

Paramount Chitimukulu designate Henry Kanyanta Sosala has found himself frozen out after President Michael Sata personally ordered the stripping of his title following the Bemba Royal Establishment having settled for him as the rightful heir.

Chipenzi said the Act in its state ostracizes independent minded chiefs who had the ability to stand up to government.
