DMMU, RDA Join Hands

THE Road Development Agency and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit have joined forces to repair a section of the Great North Road that was damaged by heavy rainfall.

Trucks from Nakonde have been marooned for days following the damage on a portion of the Great North Road estimated at 50 metres, approximately six kilometres from Nakonde in Muchinga Province.

RDA chief executive officer Bernard Chiwala said in Lusaka yesterday that the agency and DMMU had taken steps to ensure that the situation was normalised by yesterday.

Mr Chiwala said the agency had mobilised tipper trucks, graders, rollers and excavators to the site.

Officers from the Rural Roads Unit, RDA Muchinga Province and casual workers had been mobilised to conduct the repair works, while DMMU had also dispatched a team of experts from the Zambia Army to beef up those already on the ground.

Mr Chiwala said some remedial works had already been done which had enabled trucks, buses and lighter vehicles from Lusaka proceeding to Nakonde to pass at the affected section but that operations to repair the affected portion had often been derailed by rain.

DMMU national coordinator Patrick Kangwa urged the travelling public to consult the Nakonde District Commissioner’s office when travelling to ares that pass through the damaged stretch of the road.
