Croc Kills Boy (10) in Gwembe

A TEN-year-old boy of Kalelezhi area of Chief Chipepo in Gwembe District has been killed by a crocodile. The boy, identified as Levy Njema, was killed by the reptile on Tuesday, while washing dishes on the shores of Lake Kariba. Some members of the community, who rushed to the scene only managed to pull the boy’s upper part, while the lower part was mauled by the crocodile.

District Commissioner Alice Mwiinga bemoaned the increasing human-animal conflict in Gwembe and called for urgent interventions. “I received a report that a 10-year old boy of Kalelehzi area in our district here has been attacked and killed by a crocodile in Lake Kariba which is a sad development,” she said.

Ms Mwiinga said despite continued sensitisation to communities to avoid patronising the shores of Lake Kariba, the problem of human-animal conflict had persisted. She appealed to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to crop the reptiles whose population had increased.

Ms Mwiinga said almost every week, there was a case of a person being attacked by crocodiles or hippos in Gwembe. And a 15-year-old boy of Kimiteto area of Solwezi District has allegedly been murdered.

Jonathan Lewo of Chief Kapijimpanga was murdered after being allegedly assaulted by Kenneth Nzaila and a man identified as Ngoli.

North-Western Province deputy Police chief Michael Nkaka yesterday said Nzaila was in Police custody, while Ngoli is on the run.

Mr Nkaka said a docket has been opened and Police have since launched a manhunt for the accomplice.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man of Katoka Village of Chief Mumena’s area was found dead on April,1 2014.

Mr Nkaka explained that Bisto Kolobaki was found dead near the road and that Police suspect that the deceased was drunk at the time of his death.
