Two miners burnt

Two miners from the Collum Coal Mine in Sinazongwe, Southern province were on Thursday burnt after they tried to put out a fire in shaft number two.

Nkandabwe Ward Councillor Patson Mangunje said in a telephone interview from Sinazongwe that the two were burnt as they tried to extinguish the fire from underground. He said the two were severely burnt and were rushed to Mamba District Hospital for treatment.

The fire comes barely days after shaft number five was flooded.

And Mangunje said this has raised concerns from the residents in the area.

Over US$ 50 million was invested in the mine  which government revoked license from a Chinese company over safety concerns.

The Zambia Consolidated Copper Mine Investment Holding is currently running the mine which was repossed in  February this year.
