Tension in Livingstone as Police arrest HH

The Police in Livingstone has arrested UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema with his security personal and his Senior Adviser Douglas Siakalima who just arrived in the tourist capital today.

And there are reports of protests in Livingstone following the arrest of Hichilema, some Members of Parliament and senior UPND officials. Residents and UPND supporters have mobilized themselves and protesting in the city while the Police in riot gear have been deployed in the city.

Police were firing tear-gas canisters in town but people from residential areas are reported trooping into town demanding to have their leaders released.

The tension is reported high even in other towns in the province. According to a senior UPND official, members even from other towns in the Copperbelt and Lusaka are traveling to Livingstone.

Police arrested Hichilema from the lodge he was staying after surrounding it and then forced their way in.

It is not clear what charge the UPND leaders will be given but if its murder then if convicted it carries a death penalty in according to Zambian constitution.

Livingstone will be hold a by-election this Thursday.
