POWER UTILITY ZESCO ASSURES ZAMBIANS OF ENOUGH WATER AT DAMS TO PRODUCE ELECTRICITY

LUSAKA, ZESCO Limited, the national power utility, has assured Zambians that there is enough water impounded at the country’s hydro-electric dams to generate electricity until the next rainy season.

ZESCO Limited Managing Director Victor Mundende said here Thursday that the Kafue Gorge Power Station, the biggest in the country with an installed capacity of 900 megawatts (MW) had been operating at full capacity since the first quarter of 2017.

Mundende also told a media briefing the average generation at the Kariba Power Station was now about 500 MW although the water level there had not yet reached full capacity.

He explained that ZESCO was faced with liquidity problems because of the power crisis which was experienced and that it was working to resolve the matter.

Mundende stated that the vision of the company was to ensure the Zambia becomes an electricity trading hub by 2025.

ZESCO, he added, was in the process of establishing power inter-connections with neighbouring countries.
