Banning of rallies in L/stone saddens ECZ

THE Electoral Commission of Zambia says it is saddened by the police’s banning of public rallies during campaigns in the Livingstone by-election.

And MMD deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu says the decision by police deputy Inspector General Dr Solomon Jere to stop political parties from campaigning ahead of this Thursday’s Livingstone by-election would affect the poll’s outcome.

UPND and PF cadres clashed in Livingstone on Saturday, resulting in injuries and damage to a vehicle.

This prompted police to ban the holding of political rallies in Livingstone.

But in a statement, ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna stated that the ban was unfortunate when the Commission had earlier stated that the end of the campaign period for the Mpongwe and Livingstone campaigns would be today, February 26, at 06:00 hours.

He stated that the Commission was not aware of the ban as stated by Dr Jere.
